The top five funniest excuses workers use
to get out of work

Out of the top 10 excuses that CareerBuilder listed as reasons that employees give for missing work, I chose five that I believe are the funniest.

Coming in at number five is an employee saying that “his grandmother poisoned him with ham.”

The fourth funniest excuse is the employee saying that he couldn’t come in to work because he “was stuck under the bed.”

At number three is an excuse that is common amongst “Mary Jane” lovers. The third funniest excuse goes a little something like this, “Dude, the universe told me to take a day off.”

Number two, no pun intended, is one that many can understand because it deals with the cleanliness of one’s undergarments. Coming in at number two is the employee saying his absence from work is due to his wife having to wash “all his underwear in the washer.”

And the funniest excuse of them all is the employee saying that his doctor prescribed a day of fun in the sun at the beach so that he may get a healthy dose of vitamin D. Some employers, however, didn’t find these excuses to be funny because a worker short means a loss in productivity and money made.

According to Forbes Magazine, employers lose billions of dollars whenever an employee misses work. The professional industry (nurses, doctors, and teachers weren’t included) loses the most money due to absentee workers.

The professional industry lost $24.2 billion. It was followed by manager/executives, which lost $15.2 billion. The service industry had the third highest lost, $8.5 billion, due to absentee workers.

Forbes also reported that workers miss work for various reasons. So what may seem funny at first could be something different.

For instance, a worker could be giving funny excuses to get out of work because he is being bullied at work or he is stressed out.

A worker could also be coming up with silly excuses to miss work because of parental responsibilities or he’s looking for another job.

Whatever the reason may be, the one thing that is for sure is that an employee will sometimes come up with some funny reasons why he is staying away from work for the day.
